Celebrating 50 years in business
It all begins with an idea. An idea to live and work on a family farm, which is just what Peter and Isabel Archer (founders) had dreamed of.
An opportunity arose to rent a very old nursery in Market Lavington (pictured above). Originally built in 1934 the wooden frame greenhouses were in a poor state of repair with a dysfunctional water well and waist-high weeds.
Over the next 10 years The Archers spent countless hours repairing and improving. The whole family got involved, even the children Anthony and James (pictured) and later little Jacqueline.
The first set of produce left for Bristol Market in 1976. Tomatoes and Lettuce were the main crops, but this soon gave way to cut flowers, mostly chrysanthemum and dahlia.
Times were hard, but in 1984 The Archers could stretch their tight budget to purchase a 4-acre parcel of land adjoining the rented nursery. This is where they built their very own home and finally some commercial aluminium glasshouses to cater for their expanding range of garden plants.
Soon they had a very successful weekly pitch at Devizes Market (pictured) and a number of Flower Shops. Business grew so rapidly that the family made the difficult decision to give up the markets, and focus all efforts back to the nursery with a now mature Anthony ready to take over the reins of the business.
Fast forward to present day and we have expanded to 1,800sqm of commercial glasshouse and 1,300sqm of Multi-span Polytunnels. We supply many local business’ with their flowering displays and are well supported with public trade to our nursery.
Anthony, his partner Jess and our very friendly employees are ready to welcome you to our nursery.
